Knowledge on Fire Safety
Education on fire safety is an important part in students’ safety education. To grasp the knowledge on fire safety can not only secure students’ personal safety, but also enhance the fire safety awareness of people around.
1. Danger of fires
Fires are one of the disasters which occur the most frequently and threaten people’s property, lives and the social development. Currently, there are 6 to 7 million fires annually, which cause 65 to 75 thousand people to lose their lives. The loss is still increasing.
2. Fires on campus
The fires on campus are mainly because of the illegal use of fires, failure of equipment, and the explosion of dangerous chemicals.
Students are holding huge amount of appliances. The wires in the dorms, labs and classrooms cannot meet the actual need. Some students might pull and connect wires by themselves. Such unprofessional actions might cause short circuit, overload or electric leakage, which will cause fires.
Some students use high-power appliances such as electric heater, electric hair driers, or electric mattress. The improper use of such appliances will ignite the items around and finally cause fires.
To pull wires out of the windows of tall buildings to charge the electric bicycles might also ignite the exterior insulation material of the buildings and cause inestimable loss.
3. How to prevent fires
1) To pull and connect wires by yourself is prohibited. It must be done by some professionals.
2) Report to relevant department once any damage to the wires or electric switches is found.
3) The use of appliances must meet the plan and design of the wires. High-power appliances such as electric heaters, electric hair driers, inductions and electric mattress are strictly prohibited in the dorms.
4) Cut off the power while leaving the dorm. Switch off the lights and other appliances while you are away from it.
5) The appliances should be kept away from the flammable materials around and don’t cover them with blankets, beddings or clothes while they are on.
6) Don’t throw the cigarette ends before putting it out. The temperature might be 200 to 300 centigrade and it will easily cause fires.
7) Don’t park or charge electric bicycles around tall buildings.
8) Before doing experiments in the labs, check the appliances carefully, especially the power, wires and other accessory equipment. Obey the regulations for experiments and strictly follow the stipulated procedure. The remaining experimental chemicals should be put back as required, but don’t take it away or throw it away casually. Cut off the power and sweep away the waste. Don’t mix the chemicals or drugs of contradictory nature.
4. What to do in a fire
1) Press the alarm button on the wall when there is fire.
2) Use the extinguisher around to put out the fire if it is small.
3) If the fire is too big to control, break the emergency chest on the wall to get the respirator. Put it on properly and evacuate.
4) Use a wet towel to cover your nose and mouth before evacuating when the respirator is not available. In most cases, what causes death in a fire is not the fire itself, but the smoke.
5) Evacuate quickly in order along the nearest exit. Do remember not to use elevators.
6) During the evacuation, don’t push, don’t try to rescue personal belongings. And don’t pick up the falling items, which might cause stampede.
5. Others
Do remember not to break or use fire hydrants, extinguishers, smoke detectors and other fire equipment illegally, which is against the Fire Control Law of the People’s Republic of China. Violations will face severe punishment.
